We often ask students, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But do they understand what it will require to achieve their dreams in the real world? Will they need a 4-year degree, just some college or a certificate? Will the career path they choose enable them to pay off their college debt? Will they earn enough to maintain the lifestyle they envision for themselves? For example, can they afford to live on their own in an apartment, buy a nice car, or own a pet? What would all that even cost?
Our goal at American Student Assistance® (ASA) is to help students early in their education understand their options and develop a plan to reach their goals. To that end, we are providing the interactive game, Claim Your Future, to Massachusetts educators for free. Claim Your Future is designed to help students, even as early as middle school, gain perspective on real-life opportunities and decisions. It’s a fun, casual way to get students thinking about post-high school education, career options and money management.
The game encourages career exploration and challenges students to manage income and expenses, giving them perspective on how their decisions could play out in the real world. Students learn about different industries and careers, the variety of education paths they may take, and the cost of their choices. The game helps bridge students’ aspirations with reality, giving them a solid financial foundation to make informed choices about their futures.
Each Claim Your Future game kit includes 50 career wheels, which represent the highest growing jobs in Massachusetts over the next few years and provides students with state salary information. The game can be utilized as a one-time classroom activity, an after-school activity, or as part of a larger unit on careers, higher education and money management.
ASA® has distributed more than 500 free Claim Your Future kits statewide. To learn more about Claim Your Future and request kits for your Massachusetts school or nonprofit, please visit asa.claimyourfuture.com/order-kits/. See the game in action here.
