ASA stands with the black community and all who struggle with systemic racism and racial injustice – it is reprehensible and cannot be tolerated or ignored. We lift our voices in support of the peaceful protests that seek to make America live up to its ideals and reach its full potential.
We realize that violence comes in many forms, from the physical to the mental, to the social and emotional. As an organization dedicated to the success of students for more than 60 years, we are keenly aware that educational inequity is a form of violence perpetuated against black and brown youth every day across our nation. We must continue to listen, learn, and grow in an effort to ensure that all students receive the help they need to achieve post-secondary and career readiness, along with the encouragement, support and resources they need to navigate their unique path.
We are committed to helping young people explore, experiment and execute on their educational goals, but we realize we also need to work toward addressing the real and perceived roadblocks to success. We will continue engaging with one another, leaning on one another, in order to continue learning, producing insights that matter, and focusing on promising practices that lead to positive change in all students’ lives.
Students are at the heart of all that we do. In the words of President Barack Obama, speaking directly to young people of color, “I want you to know that your lives matter. Your dreams matter.”
We are here for you, we are here with you, we join you in this fight.
