Donald Julian Reaves, Ph.D. joined the American Student Assistance® (ASA) Board in 1994 and currently serves its Chair. In his role as Board Chair Donald leads the Board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities. With extensive corporate and not-for-profit board experience Donald and his board colleagues provide oversight, guidance, and strategic direction and support for the CEO and for the goals of the organization.
Donald’s career of more than 40 years was in higher education and he holds strongly to the belief that a college education is an essential tool for advancement and upward mobility. Donald drove an 18-wheel truck and paid cash for his Cleveland State University undergraduate degree. Donald holds a masters and doctoral degree from Kent State University in political science and public administration.
Donald spent 16 years of his career in the classroom before moving permanently into administration at two of the Nation’s premier universities. He served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Brown University and vice president and chief financial officer of the University of Chicago. Donald retired in 2015 after serving eight years as Chancellor of Winston Salem State University, a Historically Black University (HBCU), within the University of North Carolina System.
In addition to the ASA Board Donald serves currently as the lead director of the Amica Mutual Insurance Company Board and the Lead Independent Trustee of the William Blair Mutual Fund Board.
