The purpose of the SALT Vision Blog is to further the national dialogue around eliminating financing as a barrier to education – and the dreams education enables.
Our nation today faces a threatening conundrum. Past experience tells us a college-educated workforce is integral to a healthy economy. After all, the U.S. modern middle class as we know it is a direct result of more Americans pursuing higher education following World War II with the assistance of the G.I. Bill. Yet in the 21st century, financing higher education –the education that’s long been the key to unlocking the American Dream – has, for generations of Americans, become a drag on economic mobility. Millennials are delaying life milestones, Generation X’ers are struggling to repay their own student loans while saving for their children’s college, and Baby Boomers are putting off retirement to deal with lingering education debt.
The SALT Vision Blog will examine the causes behind this challenge as well as the solutions within our reach. We’ll explore the needed corrections in every corner of the higher education marketplace – from colleges and universities, student loan borrowers, and the federal government to private sector employers, K-12 educators and mission-focused nonprofits – that can bring these solutions to life.
SALT, a best-in-class consumer literacy program, takes a new approach to educating students and alumni. Backed by the non-profit American Student Assistance and 60 years of experience in helping families navigate paying for college, SALT combines innovation with historical knowledge to offer a fresh perspective on policies and best practices affecting higher education. Through this blog, we look forward to sharing our insight and vision on how we can all work together to better society through a college-educated workforce capable of attaining lifelong financial security. We invite you to join the conversation.
