Keep Tabs on Your Student Loans Online

If you’ve borrowed federal student loans, you should know who holds them and the exact amounts you owe. The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) offers that information and all the other details about your federal student loans.

NSLDSSM is the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) central database for federal student aid records—and it is a great tool for managing your loans from application through repayment.

How NSLDS Works

The NSLDS website is a secure location for the most essential information about all of your federal student loans. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

With NSLDS, you can be confident that your data is from a reliable source. The database receives its loan information directly from the following agencies:

  • Schools
  • Servicers
  • Guaranty agencies
  • The Direct Loan program (DL) and other ED programs

NSLDS is updated regularly. Grant information is reported daily, and new loan information is updated within 30 days of the receipt of funds.

If you are looking for the most up-to-date information on your loans in repayment, you should contact your loan servicer (the company that sends you your student loan bills). NSLDS will likely have data on these loans, but it could be up to 120 days old.

How to Use NSLDS

You can access NSLDS to find data on your loans and/or grant amounts, outstanding balances, loan statuses, and disbursements—all in an easy-to-understand, online format. To log on to NSLDS, you will need to provide the following:

  • Your Social Security number (SSN)
  • The first 2 letters of your last name
  • Your date of birth
  • Your personal identification number (PIN)

Your PIN is the same number you used to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you forget your PIN, you can request a new one from the Federal Student Aid PIN website.

Experiencing Difficulty?

If you need assistance using NSLDS, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800.433.3243. They are available to help you Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (all times Eastern).

Remember: If you ever have questions about your loans, you can contact American Student Assistance® (ASA). We can help you manage your education debt successfully.

Private Student Loans

You will only find information about your federal student aid on NSLDS. Private loan data is not in available on NSLDS. You can get a free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com to confirm your private loan information.
