Late for Aid
Dear American Student Assistance:
My daughter has started her 2nd year in college and I missed the FAFSA deadline because of taking care of a sick father and then trying to cope with his loss. Is there anything I can do?
Thank you,
Darline
Hi Darline:
Our condolences to you and your family. Your best bet is to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as quickly as possible (online is the fastest at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) and then apply to your daughter’s financial aid office for an appeal. Write them a letter explaining your circumstances and include as much proof as you can as to your situation.
At the very least you should be able to qualify for federal loans for this school year—at best the school may be able to try and find some other types of aid as well. Please don’t hesitate to contact us again with any follow up questions you may have.
Regards,
