Credit Score

Dear American Student Assistance:

How high does my credit score have to be to get a Stafford loan?

Thank you,
Becky

Dear Becky:

Your credit is not considered when you apply for a  Stafford loan. As long as you have not borrowed the maximum loan amount or defaulted on a prior federal loan, you will likely be able to be approved for a Stafford loan. For a  PLUS loan, as long as you do not have delinquencies over 90 days, or liens, etc. you should also be approved. In short, credit scores, in and of themselves, are not considered when applying for federal student loans.
